The military appears to be under the complete control of President Mugabe, who is Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. In the early 1980s, however, some soldiers deserted to fight government forces in the Matabele bush. They provided the nucleus of dissident movements that plagued the regime until the Unity Accord of 1987. Zimbabwe receives military aid and training from the UK and South Korea. Because of Zimbabwe's policy of non-alignment, it has not entered into any formal military alliances. However, it has supported the Mozambican regime against RENAMO guerrillas and backed the US-led operation in Somalia.
